Russia supplies only defensive weapons to Syria - official
Russia will continue fulfilling its contractual obligations as part of military-technological cooperation with Syria as long as international sanctions in relation to this country are absent, Vyacheslav Dzirkaln, deputy director of the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technological Cooperation, said.
"We have been supplying only defensive weapons to Syria. The contracts have been signed. We have to fulfill them. Any UN-led international sanctions in relation to Syria are absent today," he told Interfax-AVN on the sidelines of the IDEX 2013 defense exhibition in the United Arab Emirates.
Despite the continuing crisis, Russia is cooperating with Syria because the Syrian authorities are legitimate and were elected by people, Dzirkaln said.
The future of military-technological cooperation between Russia and Syria will depend on further developments in the conflict-hit country, he said.
