Meteorite fall damage in Chelyabinsk region exceeds $ 30 million
The damage caused by a meteorite fall in the Chelyabinsk region exceeds 1 billion rubles (about $ 30 million), Chelyabinsk region Governor Mikhail Yurevich told journalists on Saturday.
"Damage has been caused to about 100,000 householders. We estimate the overall damage at more than 1 billion rubles, and this is not a very big sum for such an incident," he said.
Some 30 percent of the window glass broken by the shock wave from the meteorite fall has been repaired by now, he said.
"The window glass will be replaced fully within a week, except some stained-glass windows in buildings constructed in the Soviet era, but even this process will take no longer than two weeks," he said.
Yurevich suggested that "the worth of the damage could increase."
"A lot of buildings have been shaken," he explained.
The ice arena in Chelyabinsk has sustained quite serious damage.
The meteorite fell over the Chelyabinsk region on Friday morning. It broke into several dozen large pieces above the ground. About 1,200 people were hurt and buildings were damaged. The most frequent type of damage is broken window glass, the total area of which is about 100,000 square meters.
