Military dangers to Russia worsening along some directions - Defense Minister Shoigu
Russia needs armed forces with an optimal structure and modern weapons so as to be ready to respond to any challenges and threats, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said.
"Force still continues to play an important role in resolving economic and political disagreements between countries. Military dangers for the Russian Federation are increasing along some directions, and some hot spots are near our borders," Shoigu said at an assembly of the Academy of Military Sciences in Moscow on Saturday.
"Therefore, we should be ready to respond to any challenges and threats. To this end, we need armed forces with an optimal structure, an efficient control system, modern weapons, and professional personnel," he said.
A lot has already been done to this end, Shoigu said. "Nevertheless, we have to resolve quite a lot of problems related to the construction and development of the armed forces," he said.
Among priorities, Shoigu mentioned the improvement of the efficiency of the control of troops, the procurement of modern weapons and military hardware, the staffing of military units, and the development of the mobilization basis and mobilization deployment.
"We expect scientists from the Academy of Military Sciences will further take active part in scientific substantiation of avenues of the armed forces' development," he said.
