Posters of the Cold War lecture in Bethesda, MD
Artist and Educator Luba Sterlikova, PhD, gives talks on the history of the poster art at the Live and Learn Bethesda Education Center.
During World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union fought together as allies against the Axis powers. But by the end of the war the friendship was growing cooler and political tension replaced partnership and cooperation. The world entered a long period of the Cold War.
The Cold War was fought on many fronts but rarely contested with 'hot weapons'. It was, above all, a propaganda war in which images were used to produce both fear and loyalty at home and abroad. Posters were playing an important role in this war of political ideas.
The posters created in the USA, Russia, China, the UK and other countries will be presented.
