Damage from corruption in the Russian armed forces exceeded 7 billion rubles (about $ 228 million) in 2012, and virtually 20 percent of all crimes committed in the armed forces last year were related to corruption, says Russian Main Military Prosecutor Sergei Fridinsky.

"Nearly every fifth crime in the armed forces was corruption related, and the damage from them topped 7 billion rubles. The number of briberies grew by more than one third, misappropriations and embezzlements by half, and fraud by nearly 20 percent," Fridinsky said at an expanded military prosecutor's office board meeting on Wednesday.

Three generals and 210 senior officers, including 64 commanders of military units and heads of military institutions, were convicted for corruption-related crimes in 2012, he said.
