Russia marks Political Reprisal Victims Day
Representatives of all categories of the population, walks of life, ethnicities and faiths were subject to political reprisals in Russia in the 20th century, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said in his Political Reprisal Victims Day message.
"The years and the names united by this dramatic definition "political reprisals" will remain in the history of our country and our city forever," Sobyanin was quoted as saying by his website on Tuesday.
"People from all sectors of the society, walks of life and ethnicities, those who believed in God and atheists were subject to reprisals in Russia in the 20th century. We will light thousands of candles as a token of our grief for our fellow countrymen. Our memory of these people lives in the map of Moscow - the places linked with one of the most controversial and challenging periods of our country's history," the mayor said.
