Lavrov: Russia calls for ceasefire in Syria for time of Muslim feast
Russia regards as important the initiative of UN/LAS special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi on a ceasefire in Syria for the time of the Muslim Feast of the Sacrifice.
A statement of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov circulated on Monday calls the initiative is important and timely.
"We are calling on the Syria government and all opposition groups to positively respond to the proposal of the UN/LAS representative," the statement says.
"Thus such a necessary step will be taken to a long-term ceasefire and the launch of a political process meant to guarantee the democratic renewal of Syria in the interests of all of its citizens," the statement says.
"Russia has always spoken for an immediate end to any violence in Syria wherever it may come from and for a peaceful settlement without foreign interference of the bloody crisis causing the sufferings of ordinary Syrians," the statement says.
