German foreign minister calls Europe to work with Russia on Syria
In conditions of international instability, Europe should be cooperating with Russia more actively on world problems, including Syria, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said on Sunday.
It is absolutely apparent that the dialogue with Russia in conditions of the instability of the international situation is irreplaceable despite the differences of opinion, he said at talks of EU foreign ministers with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
We have no right to give up the search for joint solutions to international issues even though that is difficult now in the context of the Syrian conflict, Westerwelle said.
Russia and Europe have many common interests, he added.
Diplomatic sources told journalists that Lavrov's talks with EU foreign ministers in addition to Syria dealt with the nuclear problem of Iran.
On Sunday, EU foreign ministers took part in an informal working dinner with Lavrov who arrived in Luxembourg for a visit.
