The March of Millions starts in central Moscow
Columns of demonstrators are being formed on Pushkinskaya Square in the center of Moscow to proceed in what the opposition calls the March of Millions.
Two columns of March of Millions participants are being formed on Tverskoi Boulevard depending on the demonstrators' political preferences. Supporters of leftwing policies are gathering on the left side of the boulevard and activists of the People's Freedom Party (PARNAS), supporters of nationalist views, and members and activists of the Solidarity opposition group are making up another column on the right side of the boulevard.
Prominent opposition blogger Alexei Navalny and his wife have arrived at the square and joined the column of those who support rightwing policies. Former Prime Minister and currently co-leader of the Mikhail Kasyanov is also leading the rightwing column.
About 1,000 protesters have already gathered on the boulevard.
Another group of young men wearing T-shirts and carrying banners in support for the convicted members of the Pussy Riot punk band are also gathering on Pushkinskaya Square.
The situation at the scene is basically calm, and more people are coming in.
According to the Moscow police department, up to 5,000 people have gathered in central Moscow to take part in the March of Millions protest demonstration.
Police have noticed several people wearing masks in the crowd and officially asked the organizers to ensure public order and not to violate the law on mass events, which bans demonstrators from wearing masks.
