A spokesman for the police authority for the city of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region said on Saturday that more than 800 people were present at an opposition rally on the city's Campus Martius currently.

A procession in St. Petersburg that preceded the rally brought together more than 300 people, the spokesman told Interfax.

"The initial plan was that three columns would make up the procession, but, due to the small numbers of participants, they in effect united to form one column with 10 members of the LGBT community bringing up the rear," he said.

The spokesman said there had been no excesses during the march.

"Currently a rally is taking place on Campus Martius, and other participants have joined it. Altogether, more than 800 people are present at the event,\" he said.
